Anatomy
and Stretch
One
of the few athletes in sport world that does not get the benefit of stretching
is the working horse.
How
often do we see a warm up go like this. Groom, tack, walk to the arena, get
on, walk for a few minutes, trot, canter and then consider the horse warmed up
and ready to perform.
It is very important to have an idea of the horse
anatomy before you begin stretching. It is equally important that your
posture is balanced when you do the stretches with your horse so you do not
hurt yourself. With some practice, you can stretch together benefiting both of
your bodies at the same time. Learning the insertions and origins of muscles
and the importance of Ligaments and Tendons in motion can help you understand
which stretches to use and how often.
Studying the conformation of the horse you are working on will also give
you a guide to stretches that will benefit the individual animal. A general
knowledge of movement, balanced hooves, along with saddle fitting and dental
work help to make sure that we have an animal that is capable of performing
the work we ask of him or her to the absolute optimum.
International Pony Rubs has a book for stretching that includes horse
and rider. Admit, as a rider you will either stretch yourself or the horse or
neither!! I know, I am guilty of my past and often feel terrible asking horses
to perform cold. The horse is the only athlete in the world that does not get
stretched before a workout. Think about it!!!!
